Yesterday, I attended a bankers conference in San Francisco where I presented Infusionsoft to a room of 150 investors and bankers. It’s been a while since I spoke to a group like this. I forgot how disconnected they are from the realities of running a small business.
During my presentation, I showed a slide that’s a mosaic of many business owners. The happy business owners are in their element, with smiles on their faces as they run their businesses—you’ve seen pictures and ads like this before. Then I said, “Those happy faces don’t represent the reality of running a small business. The truth is, it’s incredibly hard to run a successful small business. Yes, many business owners are happy and most business owners have happy moments. But the tough times seem to roll more than the good times.”
I asked the audience to think of their friends and family members running a small business. And they got it. We all know it’s tough; most of the world doesn’t realize how tough it is. But of course, that’s what makes the success so sweet! It IS tough. Most people can’t hack it. The dark side of entrepreneurship swallows up many business owners. Only the strong survive.
As I gave my presentation yesterday, I thought about you and the millions of business owners out there who are hustling to make it work, striving for the success that brings freedom and fulfillment to business ownership. Sometimes you feel very alone. In those times, it’s tempting to quit your business.
Don’t quit. You may not feel like it, but you’re a part of a community of business owners that are working every day to achieve their dreams. Keep at it. Your success matters so much to you, your family, your customers, and your community. You can do it.
SBS Idea of the Day: Just remember you’re not alone. When you see those mosaics with all the happy business owners, remember two things: 1. Millions of business owners are right there with you, striving for success; and 2. When your business is succeeding, the freedom and fulfillment are so worth it!
